Taylor, Publisher bill@pokerrunsamerica.com Offshore racing was poised for a huge summer with Race World Offshore planning to stage a race in Toronto as part of a North American expansion. The Toronto Grand Prix would have been a jewel in the schedule of RWO, which also produces the Key West World Championship. But that was until politics got in the way. For once, the organizer and racers aren’t the issue. Blame the postponed Toronto race on the strained relations between Canada and United States. Rather than risking the relationship between the North American deteriorating further, RWO decided to get ahead of it. RWO founder Larry Bleil was working with Canadian racing partner Chris Grant of C.J. Grant Offshore Racing to stage the Toronto Grand Prix. “We agreed it was best to act decisively now, sparing all of our RWO teams, supporters and participants from further uncertainty and investment,” Bleil said. Anyone who has crossed the U.S.-Canada border with a boat knows it can be dificult. With a heightened trade war, race teams were worried boats and equipment could be delayed. Ultimately, organizers couldn’t ensure smooth border transit for crews or the equipment. Poker Runs America’s Lake Ontario Poker Run was slated for the same weekend as the Toronto Grand Prix, July 11-13. THE POKER RUN WILL CONTINUE AS SCHEDULED, and we’re hoping our friends in Canada and the United States will participate. Toronto is beautiful during the summer, especially on Lake Ontario. When Bleil announced the race in early January, it was an opportunity to showcase a premier racing circuit. RWO and Grant were willing to spend the millions needed to develop a new race site. But neither could anticipate how quickly relations have soured. They deserve credit for trying. Hopefully, both countries will have smoother relations, so the Toronto Grand Prix returns in 2026.
