For a few weeks every summer, we could escape the city to experience the great outdoors. The kids loved the RV expe- rience, we enjoyed every minute of our travels… even the dog loved the change of scenery – one tree at a time. That was back in 1971… Today, as we work on the 51st Annual RV Buyer’s Guide issue, our team is get- ting ready to welcome a third gen- eration to the RV Lifestyle Magazine crew. This model is $1,600 more expen- sive than the best-seller, which is not a lot when you consider how much more you get in the unit. The tandem axle gives the larger unit more towing stability, more load capacity, twice the braking and a smoother ride. So, even though it will weigh more than 3500 pounds loaded, it will be more stable and a bit safer to tow no matter what the tow vehicle is. Since stability and safety is not the issue, the question that remains is will a vehicle with a 3500-pound tow rating have enough power to tow this larger Sometimes, the overemphasis on weight as a towing factor cre-ates what to me seems to be a strange anomaly in the RV market. A good example of this is the hybrid trailer line that we sell at our store. The manu- facturer’s best-selling model is a 20’ trail- er, its base weight is 2800 pounds, and it has a single axle on leaf spring suspen- sion without shock absorbers. This model sells well because many people with a vehicle rated (really a rec- ommendation) to tow 3500 pounds feel that they can tow it, as that is roughly what it will weigh when loaded for travel. Right or wrong from a business sense, we do not stock this model even though it is a top seller. Instead, we suggest that people looking for a small hybrid trail- er consider this model: It is 19” longer, and 450 pounds heavier than the more popular model above, but most of the additional 450 pounds is the weight of a second axle. Livability is dramatically better; it has a sofa as well as the dinette so there is room for the whole family to sit inside on a rainy evening. The sofa Andy Thomson has been writing for RV Lifestyle Magazine for more than 25 years. He also owns and operates Can-Am RV Centre located in London, ON. continued on page 8 WHAT CAN YOU TOW? DETERMINING THE PROPER TRAILER AND TOW VEHICLE COMBINATION WILL PROVIDE SAFER, MORE COMFORTABLE TRAVELS. Both models share the same profile, have a height of 8’7” (to the top of the body) and are 8’ wide. However, it takes the same amount of power to pull either one through the air. First, let’s take a look at the pro-file. The profiles of the two models are exactly the same; they are both 8’7” tall to the top of the body, 8’ wide and they are the same shape. It will take the same amount of power to pull either one through the air. They do not have enclosed undercarriages, but the shape is more aerodynamic than some taller trailers with more vertical front profiles. They still have considerable aerodynam- ic drag however. Some tow vehicles with a 3500-pound rating will pull this pro- file through the air quite nicely, a 3.6- litre Dodge Caravan or a 3.5-litre Ford Edge come to mind. On the other hand, other vehicles with the same 3500-pound rec-ommendation will not tow them very well. For example, a Grand Caravan with the 3.3-litre engine or a Ford Escape 3.0- litre with the 4-speed transmission. What you would find when towing either trail- er is that in first and second gear there will be plenty of acceleration but trying to hold third gear at cruising speed will be difficult and take very judicious use of the throttle. Changing to a lower pro-file tire will help both vehicles a great deal but neither will have a lot of reserve in a headwind. So the bottom line is that what limits the towability of either of these trail-ers is the aerodynamic drag. I cannot think of any vehicle that has enough power to overcome the aerodynamic drag that The bottom line is that what limits the towability of these trailers is the aerody-namic drag. example, a Chevrolet Malibu with the 3.6-litre engine or a Ford Taurus with the 3.5-litre engine. I know it is more work that just matching a tow rating and trailer weight, but in the long run, you are likely to be much happier with your trailer and tow vehicle combination if you consider all of the trailer and vehicle specifications before matching them up. Your local RV dealer would be happy to assist you with the selection process. As usual, feel free to send any ques-tions. Andy W While an enclosed undercarriage would reduce aerodynamic drag, it is generally a design characteristic intended to protect your tanks from freezing in cold weather. This is a rare feature to find on a hybrid that is more likely to be used only in warm weather. Having the fresh water tank under the chassis gives a more con-sistent balance and lowers the centre of gravity when full. won’t easily handle or even notice the small difference in weight. Therefore, if your vehicle does not have enough power to tow the longer unit, it does not have enough to tow the smaller one either. If your vehicle is not stable enough with the larger trailer, then it will be less so with the smaller one. So there are some vehicles with 3500-pound tow ratings that are not great for tow-ing either of these trailers - on the other hand, there are plenty of vehicles, mainly sedans with 1000- or 2000-pound tow recommenda- tions, that will tow these quite nicely.
