After a very challenging Spring season, I am sure that all the Power Boating Canada readers are happy to be able to enjoy our favourite pastime. No doubt most of you have already enjoyed your first shakedown cruise, leaving the stress of Covid-19 as far away as possible as you keep your distance on the water. Power Boating Canada has always stressed safe boating, especially at the start of the season. This is the ideal time to check your on-board safety supplies and equip-ment, and you should repeat this check every time you prepare for a day on the water. Most important – remember that channel 16 is always at your fingertips - when needed, use it – this is the official frequency for emer-gency situations. One of the key elements of safe boating includes wearing your lifejacket, rather than leaving it stowed away. Legally, you must have life vests on board for each passenger, and make sure they are fitted properly. Boating sober is another essential safety practice – and it works for all of us. A large percentage of drownings involve alcohol, and it is amazing to read the statistics on how many of the drowning victims are found with their zippers open – what could they possibly have been thinking in those final seconds before their unfortunate demise… Boating safety courses are mandatory for everyone, and you must always carry your pleasure boat operator card. This is one of the greatest developments in boating safety. Every season we hear about people who launch their boats without checking to be sure the bilge plug is properly seated. On several occasions, I have heard people calling for help as their boat takes on water – and to make things even worse, they have left their truck and trailer parked on the boat ramp! Before you hit the throttles, make sure you have all the required safety gear on board, and most importantly, make sure your fuel tank is topped-up with fresh gas after the long winter in storage. As you leaf through the pages of this issue, you will no doubt notice two new features – the first is Tech Talk, where I explain in sim-ple terms the basics you need to know – this month, the topic is how to combat corrosion. Our second new feature brings back some treasures from the exclusive archives in the vaults of Power Boating Canada Magazine. This issue, we take a glimpse at some of the magnificent exotic and antique ves-sels that ran the waters, in a feature story by the legendary Harold Shields, a Power Boating Canada writer who served on our editorial advisory board, developed the first Toronto International Boat Show, and led the Canadian Sportsmen’s Shows for many years. Working with Harold on the Power Boating Canada advisory board were exec-utives from Mercury Marine, Volvo Penta/Atlas Polar, Yahama Canada, and executives from Johnson and Evinrude Outboards, today owned and operated by BRP. Key members and executives of Boating Ontario, then called the Ontario Marine Operators Association were active on our PBC Dealer Advisory Board. Enjoy the issue and please visit our web-site at www.powerboating.com where you can find FREE access to the digital edi-tions of the magazine. For regular updates on Canadian pleasure boating topics, send an email to editor@powerboating.com to request our PBC Newsletter – it’s the ideal way to stay in the loop between issues!Stay safe, have fun on the water!Safe Boating!William E.
